As a leader, you must have a clear view of the future and an established point of view. This includes having a plan that produces change – even when it is challenging. Once you know where you are headed, it is imperative that you share this view and plan with your team members. Communication is essential in getting the buy-in and support you need to accomplish your goal.
Visionary leaders know what they want to achieve and are the role models their teams follow. They are direct and clear about what needs to be accomplished. As the role model of the organization, remember that you must take action succinctly and definitively. No, that is not always the popular route, but it is the crucial one. That also means you must accept blame at times. It can be hard for leaders to not “pass the buck,” but I encourage you to be the face and voice of the organization when things go wrong. Try also to give credit to team members when you can. Taking blame and giving credit is the “yin-yang” of being a visionary leader.
Finally, I would ask you to ensure your own personal vision is in place and is sound. Know yourself, frequently test your integrity and, as George Vellios says: walk the walk.
